Course Details:
For all 'Team Brew' athletes and supporters in the 2009 Lanzarote Ironman
Robin Brew with Race Director Kenneth Gasque
The thought of doing an Ironman after a 14 year layoff (1994 to save you doing the maths) is one that invokes more than a few senses. My post professional triathlon racing experience is somewhat sparse to say the least, the highlight of which was part running and part walking the London Marathon in 2007, a personal worst completing it in nearly six hours, more to the point my wife beat me by over an hour!
So why attempt one of the toughest races in the world? Three good reasons, firstly, Lanzarote is a special place for me. I was fortunate to train on the Island in my formative years in triathlon and developed a great deal of respect for the Island, the people and obviously the conditions. Lanzarote provided a training ground that was second to none for the specific preparation required for triathlon. The natural elements taught me to be tough and resilient and the terrain helped me to develop physical strength. I guess in short, I have a love and affinity with the Island. Secondly, after 20 years of coaching swimming & triathlon courses at La Santa, this would, for me, be a very special way to celebrate the occasion. Finally and most importantly, to me, I will be racing in memory of my wonderful mum, Wendy Brew, who died in 2000 from pancreatic cancer.
Getting ready to go long
My mum loved Lanzarote and La Santa in particular. She was involved in the coaching courses and really enjoyed meeting new friends over the years.
If you would like to join me on my quest and fancy a crack at one of the toughest Ironman Triathlons' in the world 'The Lanzarote Ironman 2009' then simply enter the event under the club name of 'Team Brew' by following this link.
Let me know when you have booked on robin@robinbrewsports.com and you will receive regular updates from me via e-mail and our new blog, on the event, news and training progress. In addition you will be very welcome to join us at La Santa on the 21st -28th May 2009, where we can get ready for the race together and obviously support each other on the day. Following the race we will have a structured recovery programme and have some fun! There is no cost to the camp other than your contribution to the team effort in helping to raise money for the teams designated charity Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.
Where's the insanely long setting?
We aim to:
